COLORADO DIVISION OF WILDLIFE’S WEEKLY FISHING REPORT FOR JUNE 26, 2007

Posted in Fishing on June 27th, 2007

With the Fourth of July falling on a Wednesday this year, Colorado anglers are facing a bit of a dilemma: Whether to take a couple of days before the holiday and return in time for the local fireworks display, or to leave town on the Fourth and fish through a long weekend.

Either way, fishing conditions statewide appear hot as the proverbial firecracker.

The annual runoff has peaked on rivers statewide. Though a few remain high, virtually all are fishably clear. Seasonal hatches of aquatic insects including green drakes, summer caddis, pale morning duns and yellow stoneflies are under way, providing fly fishermen with a wealth of possibilities. Spin-fishermen also are likely to find frisky trout in the river of their choice.

COLORADO DIVISION OF WILDLIFE’S WEEKLY FISHING REPORT FOR JUNE 19, 2007

Posted in Fishing on June 20th, 2007

The official arrival of summer brings hints of both the heydays and the dog days to Colorado anglers, but also some reminders of the torrents of spring.

While most rivers across the state are dropping and clearing after the peak of runoff, a few are running higher than they have all spring. In western Colorado, flows in the upper Colorado River basin recently were raised significantly, and streams such as the Colorado, Blue and Williams Fork at best are marginal for fishing.

Fishing across Colorado has settled into an early summer mode. Conditions generally are good or at least improving in much of the state.

Large mountain reservoirs such as the South Park and North Park lakes and Blue Mesa and Taylor reservoirs on the Western Slope remain good bets for trout fishermen. Fish still are in relatively shallow water, within casting distance of shoreline anglers, and active through much of the day.

Posted in Fishing on May 30th, 2007

With a flip of the calendar, fishing across Colorado is in full swing. The just-concluded Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kickoff to the season for many anglers, and with the arrival of June, the stage for some of the best activity of the year is set.

Early reports from anglers returning from the Memorial Day weekend indicate they found generally good fishing conditions, with the exception of most free-flowing rivers, which were in a runoff stage, running high and discolored. The runoff is likely to continue into June, but most believe it will be of relatively short duration. Many rivers already appear to have peaked, and in another week or two will offer prime conditions.

May 21, 2007 Fishing Report

Posted in Fishing on May 23rd, 2007

Memorial Day weekend signals the unofficial start of the summer outdoor-recreation season, and in Colorado it just might be the most popular fishing weekend of the entire year.

Spring has arrived, despite an occasional setback in the weather. The school year is winding down. The season of traditional summer vacations is just beginning. Out-of-state visitors soon will be on their way, and some believe Coloradoans may be staying a little closer to home this year.

For many winter-weary Colorado fishermen, Memorial Day is both the first chance to get away for an extended weekend and the final holiday before the “tourist season.” Whether as a quick escape or a mini vacation, the upcoming holiday offers some potentially good fishing opportunities. With some exceptions, conditions are prime.
