COLORADO RELEASES DRAFT STATEWIDE PLAN FOR GREATER SAGE GROUSE

Today, the Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) released the draft statewide plan for greater sage-grouse for public review and comment until July 31. The DOW coordinated the plan’s development with input and assistance from the US Forest Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, Natural Resources Conservation Service and representatives from local greater sage-grouse working groups.

COLORADO DIVISION OF WILDLIFE’S FISHING REPORT FOR THE WEEK JUNE 13, 2007

Fishing across Colorado has settled into an early summer mode. Conditions generally are good or at least improving in much of the state.

Large mountain reservoirs such as the South Park and North Park lakes and Blue Mesa and Taylor reservoirs on the Western Slope remain good bets for trout fishermen. Fish still are in relatively shallow water, within casting distance of shoreline anglers, and active through much of the day.

COME TO THE ALL SPECIES COUNT - BIOBLITZ FESTIVAL JUNE 15 & 16, 2007

Looking for a fun family activity that gets everyone out of the house and into some Colorado nature? BioBlitz is a celebration of biodiversity and a 24-hour count of everything that grows, creeps, crawls, hops, flies or slithers. You can be a part of science as we count everything living because ALL SPECIES COUNT!

Anchored at the Audubon Center at Chatfield Reservoir, the event will kick off Friday the 15th with campfire tales and continues through Saturday with various counts and presentations on birds, bugs, mollusks, reptiles and more. An open house, sponsored by the Colorado Division of Wildlife, will be held at the Center from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. on Saturday, where attendees can visit exhibits such as the “Creepy Crawly Quest” and “Our Wild Neighbors.”

PIKES PEAK AREA DEER MANAGEMENT MEETINGS

The Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) will hold a series of meetings to gather public comments about deer management in the Pikes Peak Region for Game Management Units 511, 512, 59 and 591. Items that will be discussed include herd population objectives, buck to doe ratios, and how hunting license numbers are set. The meetings will be held at the following locations:

DON’T HANDLE WILDLIFE

This is the time of year when wildlife give birth to their young. The Colorado Division of Wildlife advises people not to approach, touch or handle young animals.

“We know that people are trying to be helpful, but young animals are best cared for by their own parents,” said Tony Gurzick, southwest assistant regional manager for the DOW. “The best thing people can do is to leave young wildlife alone.”

During spring and early summer, people often see young animals that appear to be alone in the forest, in backyards or along the sides of roads.

Shell, EnCana agree to open land for hunters

Working with the Colorado Division of Wildlife, EnCana and Shell have agreed to keep several large privately-owned parcels open for public hunting in the Piceance Creek area in Rio Blanco County near Meeker. The area impacted is mostly around hunting unit 22 and stretches south into unit 32.


The two energy firms have reached separate agreements with the DOW to allow hunting on private land owned by the companies.


The EnCana agreement is a one-year commitment by the company to keep approximately 17,000 acres of private land on the Roan Plateau open during the 2007 big game hunting seasons.

COLORADO DIVISION OF WILDLIFE’S WEEKLY FISHING REPORT FOR 6/6/07

Fishing across Colorado has moved into prime time.

With the official arrival of summer some two weeks away, fishing conditions across much of the state are becoming optimal. The only exceptions may be rivers, where the spring runoff is under way, and some Alpine lakes where ice might still be lingering and access can be blocked by remaining snow drifts.
