REMEMBER: YOU MUST HAVE A HABITAT STAMP TO ENTER STATE WILDLIFE AREAS

Posted in Hunting Regulations, Outdoors/Misc on May 23rd, 2007

As summer activities move into full swing, more and more Colorado residents will be heading out to state wildlife areas for recreation. The Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) reminds the public that anyone from 19-64 years old must have a Colorado Habitat Stamp to use state wildlife areas.

“Buying a habitat stamp provides direct support for wildlife in Colorado,” said Tom Spezze, southwest regional manager for the Colorado Division of Wildlife. “As Colorado continues to attract more people, we need to make sure that we continue to provide good habitat for wildlife.”

May 21, 2007 Fishing Report

Posted in Fishing on May 23rd, 2007

Memorial Day weekend signals the unofficial start of the summer outdoor-recreation season, and in Colorado it just might be the most popular fishing weekend of the entire year.

Spring has arrived, despite an occasional setback in the weather. The school year is winding down. The season of traditional summer vacations is just beginning. Out-of-state visitors soon will be on their way, and some believe Coloradoans may be staying a little closer to home this year.

For many winter-weary Colorado fishermen, Memorial Day is both the first chance to get away for an extended weekend and the final holiday before the “tourist season.” Whether as a quick escape or a mini vacation, the upcoming holiday offers some potentially good fishing opportunities. With some exceptions, conditions are prime.

DOW URGES: BE MINDFUL OF MOUNTAIN LIONS

Posted in Outdoors/Misc on May 21st, 2007

As campers, hikers and wildlife enthusiasts get ready to dust off their gear and head into the wild, the Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW) is reminding everyone that we live in mountain lion country. Living in lion country can mean different things to different people — some residents live in mountain lion habitat and some people just recreate there; either way, it’s important for people to be aware and know the basics.

Around the home:
-It is against the law to feed deer or other wildlife in Colorado. Attracting deer to your neighborhood increases the likelihood that mountain lions will follow because deer are a lion’s main food source.
-Closely supervise children when they play outdoors especially around dawn and dusk when lions are most active.
-Make a lot of noise when coming and going, especially from dusk until dawn.
-Turn on outside lights before stepping outside.

DO NOT APPROACH OR HANDLE YOUNG WILDLIFE

Posted in Outdoors/Misc on May 19th, 2007

This is the time of year when wildlife give birth to their young. The Colorado Division of Wildlife advises people not to approach, touch or handle young animals.

“We know that people are trying to be helpful, but young animals are best cared for by their own parents,” said Tony Gurzick, southwest assistant regional manager for the DOW. “The best thing people can do is to leave young wildlife alone.”

During spring and early summer, people often see young animals that appear to be alone in the forest, in backyards or along the sides of roads.
