COLORADO DIVISION OF WILDLIFE OFFERS FREE FISHING DAYS THIS WEEKEND

People looking for a good excuse to give fishing in Colorado a try will have one this weekend - Colorado’s free fishing days will take place June 2 and 3.

Free Fishing weekend in Colorado is an annual event that takes place the first full weekend in June and is sponsored by the Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW). It is the only time in the state where anglers do not need to buy a license to fish public waters. However, all other state fishing regulations must be followed. Copies of the state fishing regulations are available at DOW offices, license agents and on the DOW Website at: http://wildlife.state.co.us.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Makes a Finding of No Significant Impact for a Proposal to Exchange Parcels and Water Rights in Rio Blanco County, Colorado

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) has determined that a proposed land exchange between the Colorado Division of Wildlife and Shell Frontier Oil and Gas, Inc. will not have a significant impact on the human environment and will not require the preparation of an environmental impact statement pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA).

COLORADO DIVISION OF WILDLIFE’S FISHING REPORT FOR THE WEEK OF MAY 29, 2007

With a flip of the calendar, fishing across Colorado is in full swing. The just-concluded Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kickoff to the season for many anglers, and with the arrival of June, the stage for some of the best activity of the year is set.

Early reports from anglers returning from the Memorial Day weekend indicate they found generally good fishing conditions, with the exception of most free-flowing rivers, which were in a runoff stage, running high and discolored. The runoff is likely to continue into June, but most believe it will be of relatively short duration. Many rivers already appear to have peaked, and in another week or two will offer prime conditions.

THREE CONVICTIONS ISSUED FOR BIGHORN SHEEP KILLED IN CLEAR CREEK COUNTY IN 2006

A Colorado outfitter has pled guilty for hunting in a closed area about 70 yards from the shoulder of I-70 near Georgetown. Terry Sandmeier, 49, an outfitter from Fairplay, Colo., was guiding the recipient of the 2006 Auction sheep license, Byron Sadler, 64, of Lake Jackson, Texas, on Oct. 24, 2006, when they shot and killed a bighorn sheep ram off of the nearby frontage road. Bighorn Sheep hunting has been prohibited within a ¼ mile of I-70 since 1986.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife needs your help to locate reptiles and amphibian species throughout the state.

“Little is known about the populations of herpetofaunal species in Colorado,” said Jennifer Kleffner, volunteer and watchable wildlife coordinator for the DOW in Durango. “We need some citizen scientists to help us track and monitor these ecologically important animals.”
